Is Raw Flour Safe To Eat?

“Is Raw Flour Safe to Eat?” is a crucial question to consider, especially when indulging in raw cookie dough or cake batter. While many of us have enjoyed these treats without apparent consequences, it’s essential to acknowledge the potential risks. Raw flour, like raw eggs, can harbor harmful bacteria such as E. coli. Though the chances of getting sick from consuming raw flour are relatively low, the consequences can be severe. Therefore, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid consuming raw flour to minimize the risk of food borne illness.

How do you make raw cookie dough safe to eat?

To make raw cookie dough safe to eat, you can follow these simple tips:

  1. Use Heat-Treated Flour: Heat-treating flour kills potential bacteria like E. coli, making it safe to consume raw. Simply spread the flour on a baking sheet and bake it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). Alternatively, as in this recipe, you can also use your microwave to treat a small batch of flour.
  2. Skip the Eggs: Traditional cookie dough recipes often contain raw eggs, which pose a risk of salmonella contamination. Opt for eggless cookie dough recipes or use pasteurized eggs to eliminate this risk.

How To Make Edible Cookie Dough

Now that your flour is safe to eat, it’s time to make Edible Cookie Dough!

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • flour (heat-treated)
  • butter (room temperature, very soft)
  • brown sugar
  • granulated sugar
  • salt
  • milk (room temperature)
  • vanilla
  • chocolate chips (or other additions)

Details on the method are in the recipe below, but you pretty much follow a standard cookie recipe:

  1. Cream butter & sugars
  2. Add dry ingredients
  3. Add milk
  4. Fold in chocolate chips or other additions

Doing this with a stand mixer or hand mixer is the easiest, but it’s doable by hand too. Make sure the butter is very soft for easier mixing. If doing it by hand, you might not achieve the same light and fluffy texture, but it’s not a big deal.

Can I make Edible Cookie Dough from any cookie recipe?

As long as you swap the eggs with milk (or use pasteurized eggs) and heat-treat your flour, you can make nearly any cookie dough safe to eat.

Can I bake the Edible Cookie Dough?

You technically can, but I won’t recommend it. The cookies won’t turn out quite right without a leavening agent like baking soda or eggs.
